The Democratic Center for Kurds Graz in Gries is not only a meeting place for organising demonstrations or crisis talks. This is also the place to maintain traditions and do something together. In addition to language, various festivals are also part of the Kurdish tradition.
A very important event is the Nowruz New Year and Spring Festival. This is traditionally celebrated at the beginning of spring on 20/21 March. In Graz, too, the center organises a glittering party every year. The center is also well visited on any other day. When entering the meeting place for the meeting with Emrah Alabay, the many golden trophies won by the association's youth groups immediately catch the eye. They are on the shelf in the corner of the large hall with the many tables, chairs and the cozy couch. The flag of the PKK and its party leader Abdullah Öcalan is also hanging on the wall. Many Western countries have rated the party as a terrorist organization. The Austrian Constitution Protection considers the party and its activities in this country to be rather harmless. The Austrian Association of Kurdish Associations therefore publicly sympathizes with the PKK and flags are on the walls in many centers or club houses in the cities.
